I’m doing an online workshop about writing dialogue. The assignment that has really got me stumped is writing cross talk. Where two characters are talking to each other but not. They are talking about completely different things but the reader is suppose to understand what isn’t being said. I can’t come up with a dialogue that would be completely as if the characters were talking to someone else other than who they are. Does anyone have any ideas?
My example might be Mary says. “It is so beautiful today. I just love it when the sun shines on the ocean and makes it sparkle.”
Joan says, “The rain cleans the air so it is much easier to breath than with all the dust that dry earth causes.”
Yes they are on the same subject but not about the same thing. But that isn’t enough non commutative dialogue. I will try that and see what comments I get.
